Massive Weekend For Vicbred Bonuses

IT’S UNLIKELY there has ever been a better advertisement for the $5.4m Vicbred scheme than the weekend of May 8 to 10, 2009.

A total of $47,587.50 in Vicbred breeder bonuses were paid out following the running of feature races across three States.

And in a great fillip for the breeding and racing incentive scheme, the bulk of the money was paid to people who no longer own the winning horses.

Fran Hausfeld, the breeder of Cuttheattitude, picked up a $22,500 Vicbred breeders bonus for the two-year-old’s win in the $300,000 Australian Pacing Gold Final at Albion Park.

That represents a handy return on investment when you consider Hausfeld sold the Modern Art gelding at the Sydney APG sale 15 months earlier for just $13,500.

However, Cuttheattitude wasn’t the only Albion Park winner to provide its breeder with a handsome windfall on the feature program.

Super Falcon’s win in the Qbred Triad 3YO Final for colts’ and geldings’ earned breeder Jenkscraft Pty Ltd $6375 – a figure $1375 above the youngster’s sale price at the 2007 APG Brisbane auction.

Star Western Australian gelding David Hercules was another to claim a Vicbred breeder bonus following his success in the Champagne 2YO Classic at Gloucester Park.

The prized Group win netted breeder Steve Johnson a $3375 Vicbred bonus and he’ll be in line for more handsome returns when David Hercules contests in this year’s Australasian Breeders Crown.

To cap a massive weekend, two sizable bonuses were also on offer at Moonee Valley.

Wyperfeld picked up a $61,500 first prize cheque for her upset win in the Vicbred Super Series Final for four-year-old mares, and also earned a $7500 Vicbred breeder bonus for trainer John Hallam’s Ilinea Pty Ltd.

Conaroyal secured a $3750 Vicbred breeder bonus, plus the $30,750 winner’s stake for owner/breeders Gill Norris and Joan Tilley after triumphing in the Vicbred Super Series Final for three-year-old trotters.

Currently, an amount equivalent to seven and a half percent of the total stake is paid to the breeder of a Vicbred horse that wins a two, three or four-year-old race in Victoria or a two, three or four-year-old Group race in Australia.

This bonus is paid on top of the advertised stake.

In a further windfall for Vicbred breeders, the figure will increase to 10 percent commencing with two-year-olds in the 2009/10 season.

The crop will also be the first to race for a lucrative $5000 (up from $2750) Vicbred win bonus for their first racetrack success.

Stud Dispersal

KEVIN Riseley, who has for many years been one of Victoria’s most prominent standardbred owners and breeders, has decided to completely disperse his broodmare band.

The auction will be held at Empire Stallions, Arcadia on Sunday, June 21.

It comprises some 45 lots – 24 of which are from Riseley and include the strongest contingent of imported mares ever sold in Australia.

The mares have been served by top stallions such as Muscles Yankee, Modern Art, Armbro Operative, Dream Away and Blissfull Hall.

One of the star attractions will be the broodmare gem Late Withdrawal, the dam of Breeders Crown champions Right Interest and Magic Interest, and outstanding open class trotter National Interest; and their Sierra Kosmos half sister Fulloninterest.

Both mares have been served by outstanding US trotting stallion Muscles Yankee.

Spring Wiper, the dam of By My Side and Whipair; and the American mares Cams Coup De Grace (sister to Little Brown Jug winner Goalie Jeff), Spank Me Hard (a daughter USTA Horse of The Year, Miss Easy) and Panbrake (dam of open class trotter Dougie) will also go up for auction.

Riseley has been involved in harness racing for nearly 30 years, and in that time his horses have been prolific earners.

Amongst his draft are daughters of Andover Hall and Like A Prayer, the first offerings by those stallions in the southern hemisphere.

The sale also features a major dispersal of the breeding stock of Colleen and Kevin Bamford’s Daisy Hill Racing and Breeding, as well as several class lots from leading breeder Ross Gange’s Lemon Tree Stud.

Both consignments have a heavy concentration of imported American blood, with the champion stallions Western Hanover, Artsplace, Abercrombie and Cam Fella being prominent.

The Bamford draft includes the dam of outstanding USA juvenile Alittlemoreaction, a daughter of the Victoria Sires’ Stakes champion Belinda, the dam of NSW Oaks placegetter Lahaini and the dams of Cam Keep A Secret (Albion Park wins) and Shoot The Dice.

The Group-winning mare Spring Walton; Tasma Walton (1:51.6); Misty Scooter (dam of seven in 1:57) and Maori Azolla (half-sister to Noopy Kiosk and Tennotrump) head the Gange offering.

Cornsilk, one of Australia’s top juvenile fillies who took a 1:52 record in America, will also go under the hammer together with her Mach Three weanling colt.

The sale represents a perfect opportunity for breeders to view and purchase world class bloodlines at an Australian sale.

For a catalogue or further information contact the selling agents Davidson Cameron Board & Simmons on phone (02) 6884-8355 or Peter Dow (0412 195-986).

New Stallion Unveiled

STALLION Station, one of Australasia’s leading standardbred studs, and North American breeding conglomerate Kentuckiana Farms have joined forces to make an exciting announcement looking forward to the new breeding season.

The 2007 US Breeders Crown champion and Governor’s Cup winner Santanna Blue Chip (2, 1:51.4) will stand at Stallion Station’s New Zealand base at Christchurch in 2009.

With a lifetime bankroll of $1,608,733 including $931,223 as a juvenile, Santanna Blue Chip retired as the richest son of siring sensation Art Major, both in two-year-old and career earnings.

During his two-year-old campaign, Santanna Blue Chip finished in the money in all 11 starts (five wins, six placings) on his way to becoming the richest ever freshman.

His brilliant season was highlighted by wins in the $760,968 Governor’s Cup and $650,000 Breeders Crown, defeating Sand Shooter and the ill-fated Robert’s Rage along the way.

He was also stakes placed in the Metro, Champlain, and Nassagaweya, finishing either second or third in all three to Somebeachsomewhere.

As a three-year-old, Santanna Blue Chip earned $681,637, finishing in the money at 10 of his 14 starts.

His credits included wins in the Simcoe and Art Rooney elimination, and stakes placed finishes to Somebeachsomewhere in the Burlington, North America Cup elimination, Confederation Cup and Messenger.

He was also stakes placed in the Rooney Final and Little Brown Jug.

Santanna Blue Chip possesses outstanding conformation and a can’t miss early speed pedigree, being the richest son of Art Major and from the two-year-old Debutante and New Jersey Sire Stakes winner Mmissus Hanover 2, 1:53.8 (by Matt’s Scooter).

He was a striking $75,000 yearling and his full brother Jody J Blue Chip sold at the 2008 Lexington Selected Sale Company annual yearling sale for $100,000.

A 2005 foal, Santanna Blue Chip is standing his first season at Kentuckiana Farms, Ontario.

Stallion Station has just completed its best ever season.

Flagship Mach Three, the sire of the world record holder Somebeachsomewhere and Kiwi star Auckland Reactor, is already fully booked for the 2009 season.

Similarly, stud mate Courage Under Fire, winner of a record six Derby classics and one of Australia’s hottest young sires, has attracted a full book again in NZ and is close to being full in Australia.
